Deane Root to be Editor in Chief of Grove Music Program at OUP
Over the past seven months Oxford University Press, in consultation with the members of the Grove Advisory Panel consisting of representatives from eight societies devoted to music scholarship and librarianship, has engaged in a search for a new Editor in Chief of the Grove Music program at OUP. I am now pleased to announce the appointment of Deane Root to the post of Editor in Chief. Dr. Root, Professor of Music and Director of the Center for American Music at the University of Pittsburgh, is an ideal fit for the position and brings with him a wealth of experience as a professor, scholar, and librarian. He worked as both a copyeditor and advisory editor on the 1980 New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians under Stanley Sadie, was an integral part of the creation of Resources of American Music: A Directory of Source Materials, and is founder and director of the Voices Across Time project. His broad experience makes him perfectly suited to help direct Grove forward.
One of the first tasks we will undertake with Dr. Root will be to assemble an editorial board to support the Editor in Chief and provide a broad range of editorial representation within the field of music. We are committed to maintaining the currency of existing content and to expanding Grove’s coverage; a system of subeditors will ensure that this is done with balance and integrity. In addition to building an editorial board, Dr. Root will oversee the review process for content developed over the last several months as well as work with the staff at OUP to set the course for the next phase of Grove’s development as a scholarly resource. The Grove Advisory Panel will continue to provide guidance and serve as a direct link between the members’ respective societies and the Grove editorial team.
The editorial team at Oxford University Press and I are excited about the future of Grove; we look forward to working with Dr. Root and are grateful to him for making a place for Grove in his life. There will be an open forum providing the music community an opportunity to discuss Grove Music’s present and future at the annual meeting of the American Musicological Society in Philadelphia this November.
