(b Philadelphia, Feb 2, 1951). American electric bass guitarist. After playing double bass and trombone he took up electric bass guitar around 1968. He worked with Horace Silver and recorded with Woody Herman (1972), Chuck Mangione (1973), and Chet Baker (1973). As a member of Weather Report from 1974 he played on three albums and toured with the group until 1976; typical examples of his syncopated ostinatos may be heard in the solid conga rhythm (i.e., from the Latin dance the conga, not the percussion instrument of that name) on Land of Make Believe, from Mangione’s album of that same title (1973, Mer. SRM1-684), and in the agile funk-rock line on Cucumber Slumber, from the album Mysterious Traveler (c1974, Col. KC32494). He also recorded with Cannonball Adderley and Eddie Henderson (both 1975), Billy Cobham (1976–7, with whom he toured Europe), Flora Purim (...
